I cant remember some of my earliest birthdays, but the one I do remember was my tenth birthday. This was because my mother took me to the bakery to let me choose the kind of birthday cake decoration I wanted. Although it seems rather trivial now, at that time, it seemed like the most important decision I could ever hope to make.

Finally, I settled on a rather simple birthday cake design of a ship. Frankly, it was a bit of a let down when it finally arrived. In a bid to scrimp on the icing cost, the baker had conveniently made it a two tier cake, but with the upper deck being made completely out of wafer! It was all coated with icing to make it seem solid enough. But the cat was out of the bag when one of the candles that happened to be precariously close to the upper deck melted it and allowed the wafer to burn! Anyways, the rest of the birthday was a grand affair, and in my mind, all because of the birthday cake decoration.
A while later, when I happened to graduate, I got my second custom designed birthday cake decoration. This one was a rather simple affair by comparison. I didnt have to go down to the baker to choose a design I managed to do so entirely online this time around. But the thing that I noticed was that the number of birthday cake decorations had grown exponentially! There were a whole lot more designs and even a whole new range of techniques to use those designs as part of birthday cake decorations. I was especially impressed by a particular technology that allowed me to print out my photograph on the birthday cake in edible ink! Imagine that! You can now guess what birthday cake decoration I got!
